He joined a graffiti crew while living in Spain in 1999. His outdoor life experience introduced him to large post-graffiti murals \u2014 the works he is best known for \u2014 enriched by the influence of Caribbean colors into more vivid hues. In 2006, he gained attention with \u201cA Tag the Width of Manhattan\u201d, an 8-mile-long paint line \u2014 from the East River to the Hudson River \u2014 which, viewed from the air, spells out his name: the largest tag in the world. Scale and experimentation are key words in MOMO\u2019s art; his abstract, optical color collages are designed on digital sketches and then realized with self-made tools. His aesthetics is dominated by geometry, seriality of the sign, and compositional rigor; his works reflect influences from digital culture, rave music, coding, and generative art \u2014 a rather unique legacy in the urban art scene. He started with graffiti as a youth, but his artistic maturation occurred in California, also influenced by collaborations with Clare Rojas and Barry McGee. His work is a sophisticated elaboration of abstract images and digital distortions, with chromatic and aesthetic juxtapositions that make his work very iconic. He creates his works using graphite, ballpoint pen, spray can, oil pastels, and bleach on supports such as cardboard, plaster, and found objects.
